Kate Maurer

(she/her)
Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor

We all confront the problem of being a human being in a complex world, and yet every person’s story is endlessly particular. As a therapist, I want to help you understand your own story and find healing, meaning, and purpose. I focus on creating a safe and accepting space for clients to explore and define their problems. I use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), as well as mindfulness, acceptance, and DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) strategies to empower clients to manage their pain, tell more helpful stories about their lives, and move forward.

I am EMDR trained and enjoy using this powerful tool to help clients understand their responses to trauma and heal from traumatic experiences. I reject shallow “positive thinking” and aim to help clients

embrace the complexity and range of their lived experiences. I believe that there is no one right answer to the problem of being human and that my role as a therapist is to help you find your best answers.

I am experienced in treating depression, anxiety, compulsive behaviors, PTSD and other effects of trauma, helping people to cope with life changes and loss, and a range of other mental health concerns.

I am a climate-aware therapist and open to acknowledging and working with climate anxiety or grief in therapy. I enjoy working with college students and young adults to help them navigate this challenging and formative time. I approach a client’s experience with attention to social and cultural context and stressors when needed.

“In the depths of winter I at last discovered
that there was in me an invincible summer.”

— Albert Camus

I am a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) in the state of Illinois. I received my MA in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Illinois University.

Prior to working at Bodhi, I spent three years working in a community mental health, where I gained experience working with many different mental health concerns and learned to be adaptable and humble in my work with clients. I have also worked in substance abuse assessment and treatment, and, prior to my training as a therapist, I worked as an editor, arts educator, and community organizer.

In my spare time, I write poetry and non-fiction and enjoy cooking, playing drums, reading, running and hiking, and being outdoors.
