Tim McNeill

(he/him)
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Are you a college athlete struggling with confidence, performance anxiety, or the mental pressure that comes with competing at a high level? Or are you finding yourself relying on alcohol or substances to cope with stress, pressure, or emotional challenges? You don’t have to navigate any of this alone. Therapy can help you build skills, regain control, and move forward with clarity and confidence. I specialize in working with college athletes facing sports performance anxiety, mental blocks, burnout, and confidence challenges. I also work with college students and adults who are struggling with addiction, substance abuse, or unhealthy coping patterns. Many of my clients are high-achieving, driven individuals who feel intense pressure to perform, succeed, and keep everything together.

Therapy offers a space to slow things down, build practical tools, and make real, lasting changes. In my work with athletes, we focus on managing performance anxiety, improving focus, strengthening confidence, and developing mental resilience under pressure. Therapy helps athletes perform more consistently in competition, manage expectations, and reconnect with the enjoyment of their sport. We also address challenges related to injuries, setbacks, transitions, and athletic identity.

In my work with addiction, I support clients in understanding their relationship with substances and developing healthier coping strategies. Substance use often starts as a way to manage stress or emotions, but over time it can begin to interfere with daily life, relationships, and goals. Therapy provides a nonjudgmental space to address patterns, build skills for change, and move toward recovery in a way that feels sustainable and aligned with your values. Therapy offers a supportive and nonjudgmental space to examine substance use patterns and develop healthier coping strategies. If alcohol or drugs have become a way to manage stress, anxiety, or life demands, there are effective alternatives. Together, we focus on building skills that support recovery, emotional regulation, and long-term stability for college students and adults.I treat a range of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and mood-related challenges, with a primary focus on sports performance and confidence and addiction and substance abuse.

My approach is evidence-based and integrative, incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based strategies, and solution-focused therapy.I have extensive experience working with individuals struggling with substance use disorders, including prior work in inpatient substance abuse treatment settings. I also work with couples and families, recognizing that addiction and mental health concerns impact relationships and support systems, not just individuals.

“Don’t be afraid of change, be afraid of not changing”

Prior to becoming a counselor, I was a gymnast on the U.S. National Team, a five-time NCAA Champion, and a U.S. Champion. Competing at an elite level while managing significant injuries gave me firsthand insight into the mental and emotional demands of athletics. This lived experience, combined with clinical training, allows me to deeply understand the pressures faced by college athletes and high-achieving individuals.

I frequently work with teens, college students, and adults, particularly collegiate athletes, though I welcome clients of all ages and backgrounds. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Illinois and a National Certified Counselor. I earned my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling from East Carolina University and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.

My therapeutic approach is collaborative and client-centered. You are the expert on your own life. My role is to work alongside you to identify goals, develop effective coping strategies, and create sustainable change. Therapy is an active process, and together we focus on making meaningful changes that support both mental health and performance, in and out of the counseling room.

Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy spending time with my three corgis, who keep life entertaining and grounded.
